Our 2026 Local County Candidates

County Assessor Candidate
Hugh "Geno" Jones

If you've ever had any business in the office of the Torrance County Assessor's office in the past two decades, chances are you've met our Democratic candidate for Assessor, Geno Jones. His real first name is "Hugh", but everyone knows him as "Geno". He's been on the job in that office for nearly 20 years, and is currently the Office Manager.

Nobody knows the Assessor's office, or the job of the County Assessor, better than Geno. He, quite literally, knows the office and the position, inside and out.

A product of Highland High School and the University of New Mexico, Geno and his wife, Amy, make their home in Macintosh.

OH! And, rumor has it that he's a very accomplished drummer, too!

County Commission Candidate District 1
Albert Chavez

As a longtime resident and active community member, Albert Chavez knows our needs and is committed to serving the people, not the party. A successful entrepreneur and passionate advocate for youth and families, he’s dedicated to building a stronger, brighter future for our community. Let’s support a leader who puts people first.

County Commission Candidate District 2
William "Bill" Peifer

Bill Peifer is a New Mexican by choice, not by birth. Born in Wyoming and raised mostly on the East Coast, he served in the Army for a few years during the Vietnam War, and then returned to college, graduating cum laude from Delaware College of Science and Agriculture (now Delaware Valley University). Bill then took a job with General Electric’s Space Systems Division in Pennsylvania, first as a spacecraft assembly Scheduler and eventually as a Master Planner.

After becoming “enchanted” with the Land of Enchantment in 1982 while visiting Albuquerque for his wife Millie’s 10th high school reunion, Bill set a goal of being able to return to NM to raise his family. In 1989, Bill was finally able to achieve that goal by accepting a transfer onto a GE contract with the DoD as a Project Manager on Kirtland Air Force Base.

In 1994 he left GE to start his own IT consulting company while also teaching multiple college level computer-related courses at several colleges( including CNM) and a university . He retired from both consulting and teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic and moved, with his wife and dog to the “wide open spaces” of Torrance County. Bill's background in technology and project management is “just what the doctor ordered” on the County Commission to help solve Torrance County’s many complex issues.

Now living just outside of Moriarty, Bill and Millie have been married for 47 years and raised five children (one now deceased) and have seven grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Please visit his campaign website at
